Domitian, Imp. Caesar Domitianus Augustus, was a Roman emperor between 81 and 96AD when he was assassinated, plotted against by court officials including chamberlain Parthenius and freedman Maximus. A possible motive was the execution of freedman Epapheoditus carried out by Domitian under the offence that he did not prevent the suicide of Roman emperor Nero.
Domitian held consulship on 17 occasions which is more than any emperor before him.
He gained consulship in the year 92AD for the 16th time, XVI, hence we know this coin was minted then as the lettering on the reverse states so.
(PXII) is in brackets as it is visible on the coin but the letters aren’t clear enough to make out, however coins minted this year would have the lettering PXII.
Within the XXII in the reverse lettering, the second ‘I’ is not as clear, looks like a dot but within the same year as the ‘COS XVI’, 16th consulship, this production of coin would read XXII.
Obverse:
Laureate, curraissed bust of Domitian facing right
Lettering:
IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM PM TR (P XII)
Reverse:
Minerva standing left holding spear
Lettering:
IMP XXII COS XVI CENS
