1936
Edward VIII became king in 1936 and he chose to abdicate within the same year, once he realised he cannot remain on the throne and marry Wallis Simpson.
He did not reach his coronation and remained uncrowned. He is the only monarch is British history to resign his position voluntarily and he became the second monarch in British history to remain uncrowned, after Edward V.
Ironically both monarchs to remain uncrowned are named Edward however Edward V’s reign ended a lot more tragically. He became king at 12 years old in 1483, and under the influence of his uncle, disappeared within the castle grounds prior to his crowning. His reign only lasted 77 days.
